Hunger Relief
Community Hunger Solutions provides food that's an essential part of a healthy diet, but we rely on the work and resources of our partner food pantries, food banks, and community meal sites to get the food to community members who need it.
Hunger Task Force of La Crosse is a member of a statewide network of food banks committed to providing free food to partner food pantries. The Hunger Task Force works to eliminate hunger by harvesting community resources and being the voice of the hungry.
Hunger Task Force La Crosse manages a garden where they grow fresh food for local distribution. Community Hunger Solutions also donates seasonal fresh produce to Hunger Task Force. When we receive a donation that's in excess of what we can distribute locally, that bin of cucumbers, carrots, or summer squash (some of the most common) gets offered to La Crosse HTF to extend to their network of partner organizations that covers the entire La Crosse area and into Minnesota!
Like Community Hunger Solutions, Hunger Task Force doesn't charge for food or network membership which helps keep costs down for partner programs.
You'll also find HTF on our page of food rescue partners because they supply Community Hunger Solutions with dairy products from their network of donors (delivered to our facility free of charge!)
Second Harvest Foodbank exists to end hunger in southwestern Wisconsin. Second Harvest is a member of the nationwide organization Feeding America and operates mobile food pantries and provides food and support to local pantries in their service area.
Community Hunger Solutions provides Second Harvest with quality seconds produce from local organic farms. Second Harvest compensates CHS for this produce which allows CHS to pay our partner farmers. This partnership allows CHS to put $10,000 - $20,000 annually into the local food economy, paid directly to farmers!
Second Harvest serves 16 counties in southwestern Wisconsin and rescues over 1 million pounds of food annually!
Immediately following the catastrophic flooding of Vernon, Monroe, Crawford and surrounding counties in 2018, Second Harvest rushed 15 pallets of non-perishable food and six pallets of clean water to Community Hunger Solutions' facility, allowing CHS to keep area pantries supplied despite road closures. CHS was then able to re-direct fresh food to the many hot meal programs supplying clean up volunteers and displaced families with food.
