Autumn Bounty from Turkey Ridge Organic Orchard

An earnest farm hand goes to great heights for the apple harvest!

As you may well know, each Thursday we visit a local farm to “glean” produce that would otherwise go unharvested. This past Thursday, we made our second trip of the season to Turkey Ridge Organic Orchard in Gays Mills. With the help of six volunteers, including three Youth Initiative High School students, we harvested 800 pounds of apples, bringing the total Turkey Ridge donation to food pantries to a record 3,000 pounds this season!

This milestone is in large part thanks to Turkey Ridge owner, Faye Welch, who has been very generous in contributing to local food pantries through our work. Rather than picking the leftover apples, “We set aside rows of apples that we want to donate and have you pick them first,” she said.

Of course, we also could not have harvested over 1 ton of apples without the help of all our volunteers. In addition to the YIHS students, we also had a group of Organic Valley staff a few weeks earlier, in addition to many other generous individuals. Sharing the bounty continues to be truly a community effort.
